What are the different types of air conditioning?
There are three main types of air conditioning. These are:
- Portable air conditioning units
- Wall split air conditioning units
- Ceiling cassette air conditioning units
Discover more about these different types of air conditioning below.
Portable air conditioning units
Easy to use, portable air conditioning units are plug-in-and-go solutions, making them the obvious choice for domestic settings. There are a whole host of portable air conditioning units on the market, suitable for small and large rooms. These units are available for purchase online or at DIY shops such as B&Q.
A basic portable air conditioning unit will offer you cooling, fan, and dehumidifier modes. They’re usually fairly lightweight, and can easily be moved from room to room thanks to the wheel base. If you’re prepared to up your budget, a portable air conditioning unit can offer you Google and Amazon smart home integration, heating, and full climate control.
While super-convenient, portable air conditioning units are noisier than wall-mounted units and do use a window hose system to deposit moisture collected or produced by the system. They also take up a fair amount of floor space, so they can get in the way. These solutions are typically best suited to short-term solutions because they can be loud, take up floor space and aren’t very energy efficient.
If you are looking for a long-term solution in your home or workspace, we would recommend considering one of the below options. These solutions can be more of an investment when being installed, but they offer a number of benefits. As they are wall-mounted or ceiling-mounted, they are out of the way. Additionally, most solutions will provide a range of heating and cooling options all the while being energy efficient, meaning you would spend less money running the system than you would a portable one.
If you aren’t sure whether it is worth investing in a portable unit, or a more permanent solution, get in touch with our team. We are always happy to discuss the pros and cons of each solution to help you make an informed decision. Call us on 0800 0189941.
Wall split air conditioning units
Wall split air conditioning units require professional installation. There used to be options for self-installation, but now it’s all fully regulated, with a certificate required to prove that your unit has been installed by an engineer. The units are called wall split units as there’s an internal unit and an external unit. Because it’s the external unit that removes heat and condensation from the room, wall split air conditioning units are much quieter than portable air conditioning units.
Although they require professional installation, wall split air conditioning units don’t have to be expensive – even a basic model offers cooling, heating, and dehumidifying. A more expensive option offers wifi connectivity, smart home set up and enough power to cool or heat a large office or industrial space. If a split air conditioning unit is the right option for you, you shouldn’t need planning permission to go ahead with the installation. If you’re unsure, the Cool-Tec team are happy to advise.
Ceiling cassette air conditioning units
Ceiling cassette air conditioning units are very similar to wall split air conditioning units – the only difference is the internal unit sits in the ceiling, rather than on the wall. Ceiling cassette units are incredibly popular with retail showrooms and offices, thanks to their subtle appearance. There are different types of ceiling cassette air conditioning units – one of the most popular ones is an external unit that feeds into multiple internal units, distributing cool air and heat around the entire building.
When it comes budget, ceiling cassette air conditioning units are generally more expensive than wall unit and portable air conditioning units. That said, even on the lower end of the price spectrum, you can expect to benefit from high energy efficiency to keep those bills down, wifi connectivity, and fairly decent cooling capacity.
