Solutions for Staying Cool or Keeping Toasty

Most of our air conditioning units have in-built temperature control systems, giving you the option to choose between heating, cooling or ventilation.

With the control system, less energy is used as the unit isn’t running overboard during times that it doesn’t need to be. This means you can reduce your carbon footprint and pay less for your energy bills.

Air Conditioning in a Nutshell

In an air conditioning unit, a chemical refrigerant transfers heat from one part of the system to the other, before releasing it. We won’t bore you with the details, but this process requires four major components: a compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and an evaporator.

The compressor the coolant and turns it into a hot, high-pressured gas that is then pumped into the condenser. The refrigerant moves through the condenser (which is a long coiled tube) and, as it does so, heat is dissipated back into the environment (usually with the help of a fan). As it cools, it turns back into a liquid which is then passed into the expansion valve.

This valve lowers the pressure on the refrigerant even further, returning it to a liquid state. This liquid is pumped into the evaporator (another long coil), where it turns into a gas. As it evaporates, it draws heat from the air to use as energy to complete its transformation from liquid into gas. The cold air that is produced by this process is blown into the room by a fan, and that completes our basic rundown of how an air conditioning unit works.

What About Heat?

With the addition of one simple component – a reversing valve – this process of heat transfer can be reversed, so that warm air is pumped into the room rather than being expelled. By flipping the flow of the refrigerant, it’s now the cold air that is expelled while the warm air heats the room. Simple and effective.

Air Conditioning FAQs

I’m interested in having air conditioning installed, do you charge for the initial consultation?

We never charge for initial call out and survey. Our experienced and knowledgeable project managers would love to come and discuss your requirements, and answer any questions you may have.

Why should I invest in air conditioning when I live in the UK?

Air conditioning units aren’t just about the cooling – they can heat your home, too, helping you to create the perfect environment.

Technically advanced, air conditioning units heat and cool efficiently, and – for the gadget lovers –even allow you to control the temperature via a smartphone.

I’m concerned about the appearance of air conditioning units. Aren’t they ugly?

These days, air conditioning units can look as sleek and modern as you’d like. In fact, we think some of them are pretty beautiful to look at (and that’s not just because we love air conditioning!).

And if you’re concerned about the appearance of your external unit, we’d be happy to recommend the best position to blend it in with its surroundings.

Can you build me a bespoke air conditioning system?

We most definitely can! Give us a call on 0800 0189 941 to speak to one of our experienced project managers. They’ll be able to come out, carry out a free survey, and talk to you about what you would like from your air conditioning installation.

They’ll then work with you to design a bespoke system that matches your exact needs and expectations!

How often should I have my air conditioning system professionally serviced and maintained?

We recommend that you have your air conditioning system serviced once a year. It’s far better for your pocket to catch a potential issue before it has a chance to happen – which means it may be worth you having your system maintained and serviced more than once a year if you use your system often.

Get in touch with the Cool-Tec team on 0800 0189 941 and one of our friendly project managers will be more than happy to advise!

Does air conditioning make you ill?

Air conditioning systems and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems in general are used to maintain indoor temperature. As part of this process, they’re constantly replacing stagnant air in the room with fresh air from outside, which means they can help to reduce the spread of germs.

If you’re looking at air conditioning to reduce the spread of Covid-19 and other illnesses, remember to keep the air recirculation settings on your new air conditioning unit as low as possible, to ensure the air in the room is constantly replaced with fresh air, rather than being reused.

It’s important that you keep your air conditioning system regularly maintained and serviced to ensure it’s working effectively as possible.

What are air conditioning running costs?

According to research, one air conditioning unit typically costs 44p per hour to run.
